What are the advantages of participating in orientation?

Orientation is the best way for family members and the University to create a partnership for student success. Families will learn about academic and social aspects of the campus, meet current students and talk with University faculty and staff. In addition, you will meet other new Texas A&M-Kingsville students and have plenty of opportunities to have all of your questions answered.

Where will I stay?

The Kingsville Chamber of Commerce provides a list of hotels that may suit your needs.

Why do students and family members have separate programs?

Orientation is the first step in preparing the student to succeed autonomously as a college student and the first transition for family members to support their student in a new way. This is a prime opportunity for students to meet with their peers and family members to network with other parents.

Can I be with my student during advising and registration?

Unfortunately we ask that family members allow advisors and students to meet independently to discuss the student’s class schedule. Family members and students will receive a course catalog during an early morning session that they can review. Family members can outline questions that their students should have answered during their advising session.

What can I expect at Orientation?

The primary focus during Family Orientation is to acquaint you with all the support services and campus resources available to your student. Orientation is a tightly organized program of meetings and activities.

What role do family members have?

The A&M-Kingsville campus recognizes the interest and level of involvement that families have in the lives of their college students. We hope that parent’s participation in Orientation will help them understand the university environment.

Do I have to pay for the Family Orientation?

The Family Orientation program is free to attend. Family members are responsible for meals throughout the event. Meals can range between $5-$7.

Can I tour the Residence Halls while on-campus?

Although your student may not have their housing assignment at the time of orientation, you are welcomed to tour the housing facilities. Orientation Leaders will be available to take family members on a campus tour that will include the residence halls.

What should I bring to Orientation?

Bring documents that are pending for financial aid or admissions. This may include W-2’s, other tax information, test scores, and updated transcripts.

When should I make travel arrangements?

Please do not make any travel arrangements until you have printed your electronic confirmation; be sure to keep a copy for your records.

What if I can’t attend the Orientation Program?

If you cannot attend Orientation, then be certain that your student attends. If your student cannot attend orientation, they may not be able to register for classes until all orientation sessions are over, in late August. Please be aware that all students are assessed an orientation fee regardless of participation.
