Mission Statement

The Department of Recreational Sports promotes and enhances the quality of life of students and the campus community by encouraging healthy, active and balanced lifestyles through participation in recreational sports and fitness programs, services and facilities.

The department provides a wide variety of recreational sports activities that include intramural competitive sports, fitness activities and a nationally-ranked cheerleading program. Students, faculty and staff are provided an opportunity to increase physical fitness, augment leisure-time skills, and develop a positive attitude toward recreational endeavors.  The department is currently in the planning and design stages of a new Recreational Sports Center . Construction is slated to begin in fall of 2007 with occupancy for the spring semester 2009!

Intramural Sports

A wide variety of individual, dual and team intramural sports and events are offered during the fall, spring and summer semesters. The major team sports are flag football, basketball, soccer, volleyball, softball and dodgeball.  Other sports include sand volleyball, bowling, badminton and golf.  Tennis, racquetball and table tennis are popular individual/dual racquet sports.

Fitness Center

This facility is located in the Steinke Physical Education Center (SPEC).  It offers a variety of cardio equipment, free weights and strength training machines.  A variety of fitness programming and aerobic classes also are offered through the center.

Cheerleading

The Cheer Team consists of 15-20 student members including two mascots, Porky and Baby.  The team strives to build campus spirit and unity to the campus community by supporting intercollegiate athletics and all other campus wide events. This is a highly visible campus community service organization.  Tryouts for interested students are held every spring semester.  A grade point average minimum is required plus scholarships are available to selected students.

Club Sports

This program includes student organizations that are formed by students with a common interest in a particular sport that exists to promote and develop it on campus. Clubs may be instructional, recreational, competitive or a combination thereof.

Characterized as student-initiated and student managed, the structure of clubs allow student members excellent opportunities for leadership. Club sports opportunities are available in activities such as soccer, softball, golf, badminton, swimming, archery and tennis.

Extramural Sports

This program is an extension of intramural sports whereby leading student sports teams are provided the opportunity to represent the department at state and regional recreational sports sponsored tournament competition against other university and college teams. The department supports eligible student teams with travel and lodging to attend the tournaments throughout the year.

Special Events

Recreational Sports special events provide a variety of opportunities for students to participate in different and new activities. Events such as the Javapalooza, Fun Run and the Bay Fishing Trip are one-day/evening and weekend venues with a special twist of fun for students.
